Q... When I push with more advanced players, it feels like I'm the one who is pushing myself out of balance. It almost feels like magic, but it's really happening. How can I learn to advance to this higher level?

A... The sweetest victory in Tajido is an effortless victory! Yes, I agree that this pushing hands phenomena often seems like magic. Barring the classic "fake" demonstration videos, there is a simple and easy explanation for this. Every person has a center of balance. When your opponent aims to push you, simply direct their push down into your center of balance while you aim their pushing energy to move around their center of balance. This is much easier to demonstrate in person. Next time we push together I'll be happy to show you. Or, stop by for a private lesson and I'll be happy to help you master some of these skills before the next Meetup! ~n.

Q... This Taijido is intriguing but I'm not a real rough and tumble kind of person. If I join this club is it possible to play Taijido in a way that is relatively gentle and safe?

A... Yes, the first rule in Taijido is "Protect and preserve the safety of your partner.". In fact, good Taijido players know that the real internal art of Taijido is only expressed when the victory is effortless. This means that the best players know how to be light and regulate power according to each partner's preference and ability level. ~n.

Q... Is Taijido for women too, or is this just a guy thing?

A... Taijido is definitely a coed sport! A good Taijido player knows how to match the strength of their partner and then play based on the manipulation of strategy and structure. ~n.

Q... Is there a secret behind why smaller players can still push me around even though I'm stronger? Some times when I push them they feel like a spongy rock that is impossible to budge. How do they do this?

A... Yes, there is a secret... It all starts in your ability to maintain a good stance. From a good stance you can learn to transfer and store all of your opponents pushing energy into a what feels like loaded spring. This spring will release your opponent's energy back to them as soon as you find their weak angle (sort of like overcoming voltage to charge a battery). I'll be happy to show you at our next Meetup. Or, feel free stop by for a private lesson and I'll be happy to help you master some of these skills before the next Meetup. ~n.

Q... I've studied some Tai Chi in the past. Is this a good way learn Tai Chi applications?

A... Yes, Taijido is a fantastic way to learn and practice the secrets that give Tai Chi applications their unique power! ~n.

Q... I used to study and practice Aikido. I don't know much about Tai Chi Pushing Hands. Do I need to know anything about Tai Chi to become part of this group?

A... With Taijido's "freestyle" approach you can simply jump right in and begin to express and expand what you already know even without previous Tai Chi knowledge or experience. ~n.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q... I've studied Tai Chi long enough to learn a couple forms and a handful of basic pushing hands applications. I know the techniques work because they work on me, but why is it that I can't seem to make them work when I try to apply them during pushing hands? Am I missing something here?

A... One of the greatest reasons why internal arts like Tai Chi and Aikido are so much fun to practice is the fact we must learn to express internal secrets of the body and mind in order to be truly successful within either art. The good news is that these secrets are simple, easy, and fun to learn. The next time you are playing with someone who knows how to apply proper technique, simply ask them to show you (from time to time) how they were able to make a particular technique work. This is a great way for another player to help you become a more interesting partner for them to enjoy (win, win)! Naturally, you are welcome to book a private lesson with me so I can help you master some of these secrets before our next Meetup! ~n.
